FAQs

Are CCTV cameras wireless?

Wireless CCTV camera solutions are usually only recommended for domestic poperties as it is considered less secure and more open to hacking. Cabled wireless is used in commercial properties and education settings as it is more reliable.

Yes, CCTV recordings are confidential. Only administrators will have permitted rights to view the footage. Network Video Recorders (NVRs) are password-protected and rights for access can be issued upon request.

Yes, most CCTV cameras have a built-in microphone so voice and sound can be recorded. This can be activated or deactivated according to the requirements of the user. If voice or sound is being recorded, subjects must be informed.

Yes. Older cameras have infrared capabilities but images will only be recorded in black and white. Newer cameras have hybrid lighting systems, which allow a colour image to be recorded at night. Generally for external use.

Yes, this is possible if the firewall protecting the CCTV system is not sufficiently secure. Typically, the CCTV Network Video Recorder (NVR) is installed on the customer’s premises, is password-protected, and operates behind their firewall. However, if the firewall is inadequately secured, it can be compromised, potentially allowing unauthorised access to the CCTV system.

Yes, the NVR does not require access to the outside world and can operate solely on the local area network (LAN). However, if remote access is required, an internet connection will need to be enabled.

Hikvision offers a strong balance of cost-effectiveness and quality. However, it does not provide some of the advanced analytics available from brands such as Hanwha or Axis, which are often required in retail environments or larger facilities. For example, features like tracking an individual based on attributes such as clothing colour (e.g. a red hat) are not typically supported by Hikvision. These advanced capabilities come at a significant cost and can be up to four times more expensive, making Hikvision a more popular and practical choice for schools.

It is the owners discretion as to who is able to view the CCTV at work? Usually, higher management or security officers are given specific rights to the system.
